Dishwasher

I've been mulling over a post on the election, but I think that it's a more appropriate topic for the kids' newletters, so it will go there.

Turns out my dishwasher is part of a major recall (2.3 million units!) by Maytag regarding a faulty rinse-aid dispenser. Apparently, it can leak rinse aid onto the wiring, causing a MASSIVE FIRE. Holy crap. I have ALWAYS had problems with the rinse aid dispenser, but I thought it was just an annoyance, not a fire hazard. Geez.

So now I'm not supposed to use the dishwasher until Matag can send parts and spring for a repairman to come and fix it. So Maytag is willing to foot the bill to repair up to 2.3 million dishwashers. I wonder about the risk/benefit analysis on that one. You know, the one where they decide how many houses they're willing to replace and how many lives they're willing to put in danger until the cost of repairing their machines becomes cheaper than letting people's houses catch fire.

2.3 million. Sure, a lot of those are probably out of commision, junked in favor of new models, and not subject to repair, but still. 2.3 million is quite a number, even if they only end up fixing 10% of them. Creepier still is how much trouble I've had with the dispenser in my unit for the past 8 years. I guess I was washing dishes on borrowed time. I'm renaming the dishwasher Sparky.

I'm worried about what else is wrong with it, too.

I said to Dim that maybe we should buy each other half of a new dishwasher for Christmas. He balked. I guess I'll wait and see how comfortable I feel with the repair. Until then, I'm hand washing dishes and keeping Sparky in my peripheral vision.
