Bean has fallen in love with a kid's song DVD by the Laurie Berkner Band. The songs are catchy and simple, and Bean loves hearing them.Over and over and over and over.
So Mama made an executive decision for the sake of her own sanity and bought her another kid's DVD - Veggie Tales. I remember a sing-along song about a cucumber singing about his hairbrush that was really cute, so I got a Veggie Tales DVD through Amazon. Yes, they're singing vegetables. Shut up. It's cute.
My only problem is that they're way more I-Love-Jesus-y than I expected. I don't have a problem with Bean being exposed to religious stuff, I take her to church after all, but the evangelical produce aisle makes me squirm a little. I don't know why. I guess I'm just not used to it.
Those songs are so damn catchy, though. I've been humming "God is bigger than the boogey man/He's bigger than godzilla or the mosters on T.V." all morning. The dancing cucumber song (Pepino Bailarin) has me in stitches, too.
Have you seen Veggie Tales? Do you like them?
Posted by Jen at June 6, 2007 12:32 PMAh yes, the proselytizing produce. Sometimes that show can be clever, I will say that. But I would have the same misgivings you do.
It did strike me as a little... literal... but if they were subtle and symbolic in their message moving (a la Narnia), they might be accused of being 'subversive'.
Anyway, its Little People that frighten me.

Posted by: susan at June 6, 2007 5:56 PMi have one of the veggie sing along tapes. it may be the same one - with the dancing cucumber and the hairbrush song. my favorite part is when jr. asparagus shouts, "why do you need a hairbrush? you don't have any haaaaaiiirrrrr!"
Posted by: kat at June 7, 2007 7:58 AMIf Veggie Tales Live! ever comes to your town, don't do what I did: It's hard to talk about, but let me just say that "Vagina Monologues" is NOT the same as Veggie Tales, even though they sound similar and cucumbers may be involved with both!
Hey, I thought it was "Veggina Monologues" and that they had a typo on the marquee. I won't make that mistake again, but, really, they should not have both shows in town at the same time.

Posted by: Jen Rodis at June 7, 2007 2:07 PMI have seen some of the Veggie Tales and I like them. They're fairly simple in their concepts, but that's the nature of teaching children, I think.
Posted by: JennySmith at June 12, 2007 6:24 AMLazy Town gives me nightmares, but at least there is techno music in the background that doesn't stick with me throughout the day. Have you seen the show? It's on Noggin, an offshoot of Nick.
