Whoever said that...

...the diapers of breast-fed babies have no odor

Ah, but wait till you give her formula or regular food! Believe me you'll notice the difference.

Yeah, but when you start giving her solids (5-6 months old) that's when the really strong smell starts. ;-) Not to mention the interesting colors.

If you'd like the name and number of a great lactation consultant while you're nursing, let me know and I'd be happy to pass that along (I also gave Atsuko her contact info). The one I consulted was absolutely wonderful and between her support and my husband and mom's support I was able to nurse my son for a full year.

The first 6-8 weeks are the hardest/most trying time for nursing. Take it day by day then week by week...once you're past this time period it's much easier from then on until you decide to wean.

I agree with you Jen! They do smell! But, I got what everyone was talking about when Dax started real food - for a week or two there, those diapers were bad enough to make anyone's eyes water! Then it just went to a regular old poop smell :)

Baby Sophia Lisa is amazingly perfect! You should be so proud of yourself for handling those needles so well. She is SO worth it!

I hope she gets into the swing of things easily and stays latched on now that UPS delivered your milk :)

When I woke up this morning I was thinking about how I had the same problem you described to me. Here was my life-saver and I hope it works for you too: The baby isn't getting that milk comes from you, that's why she cries. Get the milk started before you introduce her to the nipple by putting a warm moist towel on it. The milk should start to come out (like it used to with me in the shower). Then hold her up to it and she if she gets some. Good luck! Tough times will get better soon.

Keep in mind, too, that it can take anywhere from 3-7 days for milk to come in. My son was born on a Tuesday, but my milk didn't come in until Monday.

And the warm, moist towel that Nicole mentions work great too...especially for engorgement.

Good thing to keep in mind...you and the baby are both learning how to get the nursing thing down so there's bound to be frustrations. It took Ian and me 4 weeks before we both really got the hang of it. So don't despair and hang in there! :-)

Check out the journal Tending Violet on http://www.babycenter.com . Chronicles a new mom and her daughter through the first year and she's a nursing mom, so she mentions all the ups and downs about that too...and in wonderful, relatable style.
